Today, 98% of cyber attacks rely on social engineering, and phishing specifically accounts for 80% of reported security incidents. A business fell victim to ransomware on average every 10 seconds in 2020. And it still stands that 60% of small businesses that experience a data breach close their doors permanently within 6 months.
I provide these few statistics not to scare you - I don't like the scare tactics that many vendors operate on today. But rather, I provide them to make it clear up front what we are talking about, the size of the (potential) problem, particularly for small businesses. So we can start from a known baseline.
This month we're going to be talking about security awareness. We'll hit on topics such as security awareness training & the need for it (despite widespread groans), phishing and phishing training, the extraordinarily high cost of business email compromise (BEC), social engineering, and so on. As a part of Castle Labs' philosophy, these make up a significant portion of the most basic of tenets of information security.
As mentioned above, email is the largest vector for malicious actors to gain a foothold within a target network - your network. The below file is an infographic that highlights things to look for in an email and provides about a half-dozen tips for good email hygiene. Feel free to download and provide to your organization's employees as a good reminder or reference, and as a part of the periodic short training efforts we hope you are doing.
Stick with us this month and follow our April social media posts for more tips & information around the security awareness theme; we'll have a little something for you nearly every day this month. And if the teasers happen to pique your interest, why not give us a call for more information and to see how we can help keep your small business secure - affordably.
